Classes will begin Monday June 23th, and continuing through August 18th. Sailing School graduation will be Sunday, August 17, 2008 - at 12:00 in the ballroom of the WLYC.
Registration will be every Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 am starting June 23th. For registration questions, please check the notice board by the sailing school or contact Sailing School Supervisor Dick Marvil.
Sailing School students, ages 8-11, can take the Introduction to Sailing class (6 hours of on the water instruction).
If your child is 10 by June 23th of this year or has completed the 4th grade, and has completed one Introduction session, he or she can enroll in the Elementary Level Sailing class.
Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Sailing classes will be objective-based at each level. Objectives include demonstration of knowledge and application of skills along with hours on the water in order to advance to the next level. Parents will be notified if their child needs more instruction, practice, and/or time on the water. The goal is to have copies of the skills required for each level available at registration time.
Students will not be allowed to take classes on the water until the WLYC Sailing School receives payment and signed parent release. For new students and those who did not complete the swim test in the previous 2 years, a swim test signed by a WLYC lifeguard is required before a student may participate in on the water classes.
In the case of inclement weather, at the discretion of the instructors, sailing classes could be shortened. Indoor activities will be provided, but the class may not be as long as usual. Check with the instructor when bringing your child to sailing school or call the Sailing School.
The lessons this year will begin with nomenclature, knots, and rigging. Students will practice skill blocks to complete the intermediate level. More independent practice and improving skills will characterize advanced instruction.
