History
Swimming has always been a part of our Yacht
Club activities. Swim activities and lessons were taught off the
beach or from the dock. During the 1960's Stocky Holly was in charge
of the swimming program. She had a large plastic tarp put on the
bottom of the lake for the summer to provide a place to teach
swimming. This helped keep the weeds down for lessons. The tarp was
not successful so the Board authorized the building of our own pool
in 1964. Past Commodore Fred Fishel was instrumental in raising the
funds through bonds sold to club members.
For years children of members were
lifeguards and taught lessons. Dolly Morton who had taught swimming
both at the Yacht Club and at Sylvan Beach earlier provided the Red
Cross Certification. In 1967 we hired Jim "Red" Heeres to teach
swimming. Jim continued every summer for over 30 years as head of our
swim school. His program provided our life guards and red cross
certification for those who completed the courses. He built an
exemplary program during his tenure.
Lloyd Colby volunteered to be in charge of pool maintenance when the pool opened. In 1980 Allan Dake took over the duties of pool maintenance a new high efficency heater was replaced in 1985 and Anne Dake was swim school administrator from 1980 through 1987. Linda Durrel took over as administrator from Anne, with all maintenance being supervised by our club manager. In 1992 Pam Kerr became the pool administrator. Karolyn Rillema took over as administrator in '98, under her direction we replaced most of the pool equipment, installed a new fence around the pool area and painted the pool. Collen Brand accepted the administrator of the swimming program in 2001. In 2002 Kelly Dausey began as assistant administrator. For 2006 Laurie Dermody will coordinate swim school registration and Mary Siemer will coordinate the graduation events.
We offer classes from water babies through
advanced swimmer. Basic water safety and life guard certification as
well as classes are offered as there is interest. Many of our life
guards and instructors have received their instruction at WLYC. Our
instructors are highly qualified, all having Red Cross instructor
certification, first aid, CPR and other advanced
certification.
Classes begin in June with a new sessions
beginning every two weeks. Graduation is at at the end of each
session where students are provided with certificates of
participation and if they successfully passed a level a Red Cross
card is issued. Our classes are very popular and almost every session
is always filled. We are very pleased to be able to offer the
excellent level of swimming instruction to our members.
